Family Support Specialist

DESCRIPTION:

The Family support Specialist will provide an array of interventions through Parent Coaching and Support, Therapeutic Mentoring, and One to One School-Based Programs with the goal of maintaining the family unit and preventing disruptions in the home and school placements. The Family Support Specialist will provide training and parenting skills building to assist parents and guardians become better equipped to manage behaviors their children exhibit in the home, to build and foster healthier home environments for their children to thrive and grow, and develop structure needed for effective functioning and mentoring to equip children and adolescents with tools needed to manage their problem behaviors while building cohesiveness in the home.

Parent Coaching and Support Services are home-based services that provides one on one guidance to parents and guardians on how to positively engage and encourage their child(ren) while teaching the skillset needed to manage their child(ren)’s behaviors and the challenges that are experienced with parenting. This program’s approach is individualized to determine everyone’s style of parenting, identifying areas of deficits sustained when they were parented, and determine how that aligns with meeting the current needs of their child(ren). The Family Support Specialist will observe the family unit, the parents’ implementation of skills taught and make recommendations as appropriate.

Therapeutic mentoring fosters education, skill building, and collaboration with community resources, parents, and other service providers to enhance the youth’s stability. Interventions include supporting, coaching, modeling, and training the youth in age-appropriate behaviors, interpersonal communication, problem solving, conflict resolution, independent living, and relating appropriately to other youth and adults while engaged in community-based services.

 

One to one Support Services provide individualized behavioral support for students in their academic settings. The services provide advocacy and tools needed to assist the youth, stabilize behaviors at school, improve the youth’s overall level of functioning to reduce frequent behavioral infractions and suspensions.

 

REQUIREMENTS AND TASK:

  1. Be at least 18 years old (Mentoring Services) and 21 years old (Parent Support and One to One Services.

  2. Have experience working with children, adolescents, and/or families.

  3. Ability to deliver effective, evidence-based, behavioral interventions applicable to the individual’s service plan.

  4. Be able to adhere to all program policies and procedures.

  5. Be dependable and adhere to time commitments.

  6. Attend required training sessions.

  7. Be available to work a minimum of three days /15 hours a week, including after school hours and weekends.

  8. Be willing to travel up to 40 miles from office location as needed.

  9. Must be a licensed driver in good standing.

  10. Have a clean criminal history.

  11. Serve as a positive role model and support partner.

  12. Provide effective guidance and skill building techniques.

  13. Build positive relationships by planning and participating in activities with families.

  14. Advocate for youth and their families to ensure identified needs are met.

  15. Knowledge of crisis support services available for use when needed.

  16. Facilitate family sessions weekly.

  17. Engage in service coordination with service providers assigned to client and or family.

  18. Participate in all FAPT meetings.

Minimum Qualifications:

Candidate must have a High School Diploma. Some college experience is preferred. Must have a mobile phone, Driver’s License, and reliable transportation. Must have experience working with children, adolescents, and or families.

The Board of counseling may consider other degrees in human services or in fields related to the provision of mental health services.
